What Does the Oil Warning Light Mean?

The oil warning light typically indicates a problem with your vehicle’s oil pressure or oil level. If your car’s engine doesn’t have enough oil or the oil is too dirty, it can lead to severe engine damage. The oil warning light may either be a simple oil pressure warning (usually represented by an oil can icon) or an oil level warning (which looks like a drop of oil).

There are a few possible reasons why your oil warning light might come on:

  1. Low Oil Level: The most common cause is low oil levels. This can occur if your engine is burning oil, if there’s a leak, or if you haven’t had your oil changed in a while.
  2. Oil Pressure Issues: If your engine oil is too thick, old, or dirty, it might not flow properly, causing a drop in oil pressure. This can also trigger the warning light.
  3. Oil Pump Failure: A malfunctioning oil pump could cause low oil pressure, which is a more serious issue and requires immediate attention.

What Should You Do When the Oil Warning Light Comes On?

If your oil warning light comes on, it’s important not to ignore it. Here’s a quick checklist of what to do:

  1. Stop Driving: If the oil warning light comes on while driving, pull over to a safe location and turn off the engine. Continuing to drive can cause severe engine damage if the issue is related to low oil or oil pressure so buy some oil, top it up and see if it resolves the problem
  2. Check the Oil Level: Once the engine has cooled down, check the oil level using the dipstick. If the oil is low, top it up with the recommended oil for your vehicle. You can find this information in your car’s owner manual.
  3. Inspect for Leaks: Look under your car for signs of oil leaks. If you find any, it could be the source of the problem.
  4. Check the Oil’s Condition: If the oil appears dirty or sludgy, it’s time for an oil change. Dirty oil doesn’t lubricate the engine properly and could cause damage.
  5. Call a Mechanic: If the oil level is fine and the oil looks good, but the warning light remains on, it could be a sign of an oil pressure issue or a failing oil pump. At this point, it’s best to call a mechanic to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Preventing Future Oil Problems

To avoid the oil warning light coming on in the future, regular oil changes are essential. Keeping your oil clean and at the correct level is crucial for engine health.

It's also important to use high-quality motor oil, which can significantly impact engine performance and longevity.
