What Does the Car Oil Symbol Mean?

The car oil symbol typically appears as an oil can icon, and its purpose is to alert you to potential issues related to your vehicle’s oil level or oil pressure. This light is not to be ignored, as the health of your engine’s oil is crucial to its performance and longevity.

There are two main reasons why the car oil symbol might appear:

  1. Low Oil Level: If the oil level in your engine is too low, it can lead to insufficient lubrication. This means that the moving parts inside your engine may not be properly protected, causing friction, overheating, and ultimately, potential engine damage.
  2. Low Oil Pressure: This could indicate that your oil pump is not circulating oil effectively, or there might be an issue with the oil pressure sensor. Low oil pressure is a serious problem that could result in the engine parts becoming dry and causing irreparable damage if not addressed promptly.

What Should You Do When the Car Oil Symbol Appears?

When the oil symbol lights up on your dashboard, the first thing to do is to check the oil level. Here’s how you can do that:

  1. Park Your Car on a Level Surface: Make sure your car is on a flat surface, as this ensures an accurate reading of the oil level.
  2. Turn Off the Engine and Wait: It’s important to let your car cool down for a few minutes before checking the oil, as hot oil can give an inaccurate reading.
  3. Check the Oil Level Using the Dipstick: Open the bonnet, locate the dipstick, and remove it. Wipe it clean, dip it back into the tube, then pull it out again to check the oil level. If it’s low, you may need to add more oil.
  4. Check the Oil Quality: If the oil appears dirty or gritty or miscoloured, it’s a sign that it’s time for an oil change.

If your oil levels are fine and the symbol remains on, it could indicate a deeper issue with oil pressure or the oil pump. At this point, it's important to consult a professional mechanic to avoid risking engine damage.
