Nearest real theory centres: Sunderland & Newcastle
Durham doesn't have its own theory test centre. Here's exactly where to book instead, plus official booking steps, test day advice, and Highway Code revision with John Nicholson (ADI).
Everything you need to know about taking your car theory test if you're based in Durham.
JNDS Online's theory resources cover both sections properly, real practice, not just memorising answers.
Practical test day advice from Durham instructor John Nicholson (ADI) to help you walk in prepared and pass first time, wherever your test centre is.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early and check in with reception. Every DVSA centre asks you to wait in a seated lobby area until called.
All smartwatches, mobile phones, coats, and car keys must be locked away in security lockers before entering the computer room.
DVSA hazard perception clips are the same nationally, they aren't specific to Durham. What genuinely helps is practising real local hazards like Browney Lane and the A177 separately, so both the test and the real roads feel familiar.
Must bring your valid UK photocard provisional driving licence. Digital photos or paper receipts are not accepted at any DVSA theory test centre.
Arrive 15 minutes early at your chosen centre. Phones, smartwatches, and other electronics must be stored in a locker before entering the test room.
Covers Highway Code speed limits, stopping distances, and dual-carriageway rules, the same national question bank used at every DVSA centre.
Spot early developing hazards including Browney Lane's multi-lane roundabout and the one-way streets near the River Wear without rhythm clicking.
Collect your printed DVSA theory pass result at the reception desk to immediately unlock your practical driving test booking.

"Hello · I'm John Nicholson. As a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor with over 10 years of experience teaching learners in Durham, I built JNDS Online to give students straightforward, reliable theory and practical test preparation."
"Most learners fail their theory test not because they lack ability, but because generic apps don't explain the real process, where to book, what to expect, how it connects to your practical test. We bridge that gap with clear video lessons, full mock tests, and local route guidance."
"Whether you're taking your theory test for the first time or converting an overseas licence, I'm here to help you get your licence smoothly."
Helping learners become confident, safe drivers.
Understanding why candidates fail their theory test is the key to passing on your very first try.
Clicking too early before the hazard develops or clicking in a repetitive pattern triggers the automated anti-cheat system, resulting in 0 points for that clip.
Speed limits, stopping distances in wet/icy conditions, and dual-carriageway rules catch out candidates who rely on general knowledge instead of structured study.
Cockerton double mini-roundabouts and Morton Park A66 spiral junction rules frequently appear in multiple-choice scenarios. JNDS courses cover exact local layout rules.

Practise real DVSA test routes around the A690, Browney Lane, and A177 using Route Buddy.
Take your practical test at Enna House, Whitfield Court Industrial Estate (DH7 8XL) with total confidence.
Durham doesn't have its own theory test centre. Here are your two nearest real options, both genuine DVSA centres.
Unit 1B, Echo 24 Building, West Wear Street, Sunderland, SR1 1XD.
Tyne House, The Side, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3JA.
First Floor, Bishop Auckland Community Partnership, The Four Clocks Centre, 154a Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, DL14 7EH.
Sunderland is the most convenient if you're travelling by train, the centre is a short walk from the station. If you're driving, Bishop Auckland is often the quicker journey depending on where in Durham you're based.
John's Honest Take
"Most of my Durham students end up going to Sunderland, mainly because it's an easy train journey and you're not fighting for parking. But I always tell them, book whichever slot comes up soonest. I'd rather you sit your test two weeks earlier at Newcastle than wait an extra month for Sunderland just because it's slightly closer. The travel is a minor detail, the waiting isn't."
A Common Mistake I See
Your theory pass certificate is valid for 2 years, and I'd genuinely encourage you not to sit it before you're actually ready to start driving lessons properly. I've had students pass theory early, then get distracted with work or life, and by the time they're ready for their practical test their certificate's about to expire, meaning they have to sit the whole theory test again. Book your theory test once you've actually started lessons, not months before.
